20V 4age- VVT pulley to camshaft seal
This small O-ring seal is located on the end of the intake camshaft and seals off against the rear cavity of the VVT pulley. Suits all of the 20V 4age engine variants.
There isn’t any practical way to check the health of this seal on an assembled engine due to the fact that if it is has an issue and is allowing for oil to bypass then the oil will be deposited back into the cylinder head and not to outside of the engine. Due to this it’s suggested to change it during a full engine service or whenever the VVT pulley is removed.
Installation
– Undertake all the necessary steps required to removing the timing belt from the engine. See the OEM workshop manual under the articles section of this website for detailed instructions.
– Undo and remove the center bolt in the VVT pulley and then slide the pulley off.
– Remove old O-ring seal from the end of the intake camshaft by either peeling it off or cutting it in half with a knife.
– Wipe down the slot.
– Slide this replacement seal over the end and into the slot.
– Use oil or grease to lightly coat the outside of the seal to stop binding. Not doing so may cause the seal to be damaged during the re-install.
– Refit all the parts in the reverse order.
